Dog Foster Program
Shelter dog foster carers
Do you want to make a difference to our shelter dogs? Get involved in our fostering program!
Some of the dogs that are brought to our shelter have special needs. For instance, they might make fantastic pet dogs, but not cope well with the stress of shelter life. Some may need extra physical care, some might need training for specific issues. Some female dogs with very young puppies may need the calm environment of a home.
For these special dogs, we need special homes. We are looking for dedicated volunteers who are keen to share time and effort in helping our dogs, with the long-term goal of finding them 'forever homes'. We need people who are eager to learn and are prepared to undertake the training required for the important role of foster carers.
This kind of work is extremely rewarding but also involves some challenges. You will need to keep the trainers closely involved in your progress and agree to have them come to your home to monitor the dog's progress. You will need to show the affection and attention that you would show to your own pet, and yet accept that you will need to part from your foster dog when the time comes.
If you feel that you are in a position to foster shelter dogs and are prepared to enrol in some training, download our application form and email it training@rspca-act.org.au. If you have questions and would like to talk to our adoption/foster officer, call 6287 8100.
RSPCA ACT Pet Support
Foster care for dogs and cats is also provided under the RSPCA ACT Pet Support program.
The RSPCA Pet Support program aims to keep people and pets together in circumstances where the pet would otherwise be surrendered. The RSPCA Pet Support program is available to people who have a serious illness or are frail and elderly. This service is offered to low income earners, as resources are limited.
Are you able to assist people in your area? RSPCA Pet Support volunteers help with dog walking, grooming dogs and cats, and transporting animals to and from veterinary appointments. From time to time, we require foster carers for cats and dogs in their owner's time of need. Please email Marcia Cobb or call 6287 8100.
