Choose Wisely
CHOOSE CAGE-FREE - WHY?
- Battery farming is an animal welfare issue where every decision you make, as a consumer or as a business, can make a difference to hens in cages.
- You only have to use six cage-free eggs a week to make a difference to one hen.
- Today there are 11.6 million hens in Australia living and laying their eggs in cages. They produce 2.1 billion eggs every year. (A total of around 3 billion eggs are produced in Australia annually).
Caged hens can't express any of their natural behaviours. They can't stretch out, flap their wings, dust bathe, perch or satisfy their urge to lay eggs in a nest. Some people feel this is OK but the RSPCA, and in fact 84% of Australians believe these conditions are unacceptable.
Choose Wisely starts at 11.6 million hens and counts backwards and it won't end until every hen in Australia is living cage-free. You can track our progress on http://www.choosewisely.org.au/.
