Pet Legacy Program

Planning your Pets future without you

“Until one has loved an animal a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” – Anatole France

For many of us, our pets are cherished companions we share our lives with. However, very few of us have a plan in place should we find ourselves unable to look after them. The RSPCA ACT’s Pet Legacy Program exists to give you peace of mind, knowing that your animal companions will be cared for should you pass away or no longer able to care for them.

If you are interested in the Pet Legacy Program, please call 02 6287 8100 or email rspca@rspca-act.org.au to discuss further.

What is the Pet Legacy Program?

RSPCA ACT’s Pet Legacy Program involves our organisation taking on ownership of an animal if an individual can no longer care for them due to ill health or passing. RSPCA ACT will provide the best of care while we look for the suitable home for your animal.

Pets are rehomed with a loving family, who can care for your pets in the manner that they are accustomed.

How does the Pet Legacy Program Work?

In the unfortunate situation that your pet comes into our care the following process will occur. The animal will be seen immediately by a trained vet on staff who will perform a check and if required, your animal will receive any treatment needed. If the animal passes a veterinary check they are then seen by our senior behavioural trainer who behaviourally tests their temperament. We will endeavour to find them a home like the one you have lovingly provided them. Your pet will be placed in a suitable foster home if available, alternatively they will stay in our kennels being lovingly cared for by our kennel staff and volunteers.

Is there a fee to join the Pet Legacy Program?

The Pet Legacy Program is a free service offered by RSPCA ACT. Many individuals choose to leave a gift in their will to RSPCA ACT. There is no specific gift we recommend; it is truly up to generosity of the individual.

How do my pets join the Pet Legacy Program?

To enrol your pet into the Pet Legacy Program we require a Pet Profile and Pet Legacy Surrender form to be completed. These forms can be downloaded online or if preferred we can arrange for them to be posted to you.
Once your pet’s profile has been received they will be reviewed to access your pet’s suitability to join the program. If you wish, please call 02 6287 8100 to discuss your pet’s suitability.

What happens after my pet is accepted into the Pet Legacy Program?

Once accepted into the Pet Legacy Program, we recommend letting your family, friends and neighbours know that you wish for you beloved pets to come to RSPCA ACT in the event of your death.
An optional Pet Legacy Tag can be purchased for your pet’s collar with the necessary contact information for the Pet Legacy Program.

What type of animals can be accepted into the Pet Legacy Program?

Dog, cats and small pets are the main animals that are accepted into the Pet Legacy Program. Once we have received your pet profile they will be reviewed to ensure that your pet is suitable to join the program.

Please call 02 6287 8100 to discuss further if you own a pet other than a dog, cat or small pet to ensure we have the capability to care for them at our shelter.

What is the rehoming process for a Pet Legacy animal?

RSPCA ACT will need to be contacted in the event of your death or if you can no longer care for your pet.

Once your pet is in our care they will be seen by a veterinarian for a vet check and receive any treatment if needed. If the pet passes their veterinary check they are then seen by a member of staff behaviourally assess their temperament.

Your pet will be placed in a suitable foster home if available, alternatively they will stay in our kennels being lovingly cared for by our kennel staff and volunteers.

We take great care in finding the right home for your loved pet, and we will ensure their transition into a new home is as stress-free as possible. A meet and greet will be performed by our skilled Animal Care Assistants to ensure any interested family are a good match for your beloved pet. A potential new owner will be interviewed before the adoption is approved to ensure the perfect home is found.

Your pet will stay in the care of RSPCA ACT until a suitable home is found, this may take time to ensure the best home is found. There is no time limit for your pet to find their new home.

If you have multiple pets, we will try our best to rehome them together if requested. We cannot guarantee this will be possible, but if in the best interest of the pet we will do everything we can to find them a home together.

What happens if a family member or friend offers to take my pet?

If a family member or friend wishes to look after your pet once you are no longer able to care for them, they can take ownership of the animal. It is important to include this in your will. This may be recommended if your pet is not suitable for the Pet Legacy Program.
