250 Frisky Cats Booked So Far for Desexing!

Today, RSPCA ACT and seven local vets have started the second annual “Frisky Tom” campaign.  The campaign aims to desex 1,500 cats over a three-year period with the goal of reducing the unwanted cat population in the ACT.

RSPCA ACT Chief Executive Tammy Ven Dange emphasised the importance of this campaign, “For the third year in a row, we have seen the number of incoming kittens at the Shelter increase by at least 8% per year. This growth rate is unsustainable, as it will become increasingly difficult to find willing owners. Therefore, the purpose of this three-year program is to try to reverse this trend by removing or reducing the financial barriers for owners to get their cats desexed.”

RSPCA ACT and participating vet clinics will offer FREE desexing to cat owners. Eligible people include those who hold a current Centrelink or DVA Gold Card, live within the ACT or bordering NSW communities including Jerrabomberra, Queanbeyan, Googong and Karabar. All other members of the public will receive a 20% discount on desexing for their furry friend during August.

Cat owners are already signing up for the program. Ms. Ven Dange was pleased with booking numbers so far, “This morning we had nearly 250 cats booked across the various participating vet clinics. We are already half way towards our goal of 500 this August but there is still plenty of space for those interested. There is no better time to book your cat for desexing than right now.”

RSPCA ACT implemented the campaign after noticing a worrying trend in the increase of pregnant cats and unwanted kittens coming into care at the Weston shelter.
