BACKGROUND

RSPCA ACT ‘Frisky Tom’ cat desexing campaign ended this financial year. The three-year program was launched on the back of consecutive growth years of unwanted kittens entering the RSPCA ACT Shelter.

With some help from a grant from the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation and working with local vet clinics, we aimed to desex 1,500 cats for free for lower-income cat owners from the greater Canberra area starting in 2015/16. While the year is not quite over yet, the results have been tremendous with a projected 24% year on year drop in incoming felines.

“After reviewing prevention needs, we knew that we couldn’t just stop. The prevention program was working. As of the end of May, we have so far seen a 25.1% drop in incoming kittens and a 21.6% drop for incoming cats based on this same time last year!” Said RSPCA ACT CEO Tammy Ven Dange,

“It’s been incredible to see such a sudden and significant decrease. And with two years of reductions, we now feel confident to say that our Frisky Tom program has been successful. However, the job is not yet done, and therefore we’re excited to announce our new initiative – but without the help of a grant and other vets this time.”

FAQ's

Desexing add-on options include:

  • Vaccinations $30.00
  • Microchipping $30.00

  • Pre-Anaesthetic Blood Screening - $50

When is the program running?

The program is running during the months of July to October 2018. One day per week our vet clinic will commit a full day to ‘Fix Your Feline’.

Why should I desex my feline?

As cats can become sexually mature at 4 months of age, in order to prevent unwanted litters it is vital that cats are desexed.

Not only does it reduce the amount of cats coming into our Shelter, it’s also good for their health. Research also shows that desexed animals can actually live longer and are less likely to get certain illnesses and diseases!

Not only does it protect your furry friend, but it’s also the law. Did you know that according to the Domestic Animals Act 2000 it’s an offence in the ACT to own an undesexed cat over three months of age without a permit?

Do the right thing by your furry pal and apply for discounted desexing by filling out our form here.

How do I take part?

It’s easy! If you have a valid Centrelink concession or health care card you can apply to participate in the program by filling out this simple form and survey.

Once the your form and completed survey is received, a staff member will review and make contact within 2 business days to make a booking, organise prepayment and advise what you need to do for the day of surgery.

Will you be desexing male and female cats?

Male and female felines from 10 weeks of age are eligible to take part in the program.

What Centrelink concession and health cards are eligible?

All valid Centrelink concession or health care cards are eligible to apply for our program.

For example, you are eligible if you have one of the following:

  • DVA Gold Card
  • Commonwealth Seniors Health Card
  • Ex-Care Allowance (Child) Health Care Card
  • Foster Child Health Care Card
  • Low Income Health Care Card
  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Health Care Card for all other Centrelink allowances

Is juvenile desexing safe?

Yes. It fact, it makes the recovery process easier!

The RSPCA practises early age desexing from the age of eight weeks when the surgery is simple and recovery is rapid. Desexing, prior to sexual maturity, is an effective strategy for reducing the number of unwanted animals in the community and ensuring compliance with desexing requirements.

Will my cat receive pain relief?

Yes, all cats receive pain relief and are monitored by our veterinary clinic staff through all processes of the procedure and recovery.

Why can’t I get my cat desexed for free? You have previously through ‘Frisky Tom’.

Unfortunately, we are not in the position to offer a more significant discount or free desexing like our 'Frisky Tom' campaign. That was made possible through a 3-year financial grant that ended June 30 2018.

Unfortunately, we still need to pay for medical equipment, medication, staff members and more. The price we’re offering for ‘Fix Your Feline’ doesn't cover costs and as a result RSPCA ACT is paying the difference. We're a charity organisation and unfortunately lose money doing this program, but we believe it's worth it to reduce the number of unwanted litters.

While we understand that $120 can still be over some people's budget, we do offer prepayment plans. We hope this will help people so they can contribute smaller amounts over a period of time to make it more accessible to the people who need it most.

Is the program offered for other types of animals?

Not yet! It is definitely something that RSPCA ACT will be looking into in the future.
