250 Frisky Cats Booked So Far for Desexing!

Today, RSPCA ACT and seven local vets have started the second annual “Frisky Tom” campaign. The campaign aims to desex 1,500 cats over a three-year period with the goal of reducing the unwanted cat population in the ACT. RSPCA ACT Chief Executive Tammy Ven Dange emphasised the importance of this campaign, “For the third year in a row, we have seen the number of incoming kittens at the Shelter increase by at least 8% per year. This growth rate is unsustainable, as it will become increasingly difficult to find willing owners. Therefore, the purpose of this three-year program is to try to reverse

RSPCA ACT Disappointed in Canberra Liberals stance on Greyhound Racing Ban

Opposition Leader Jeremy Hanson has stated that the Canberra Liberals would not ban Greyhound Racing in the ACT without an independent inquiry. This announcement comes despite evidence presented by RSPCA ACT to the government showing that over 90% of trainers are NSW based with links to the live baiting scandal amongst other animal welfare concerns. RSPCA ACT CEO Tammy Ven Dange expressed her frustration, "It's really disappointing to see the Canberra Liberals take such a stance for greyhound racing. Is Your Cat Frisky?

For the second year in a row RSPCA ACT is implementing our ‘Frisky Tom’ campaign. The campaign aims to desex 1,500 cats over a three-year period with the goal of reducing the unwanted cat population in the ACT. Why is this so exciting? RSPCA ACT and participating vet clinics will offer FREE desexing to cat owners who hold a current Centrelink or DVA Gold Card, and live within the ACT or bordering NSW communities including Jerrabomberra, Queanbeyan, Googong and Karabar. Don’t have one of those? No problem! People are still eligible to receive a 20% discount on desexing for their furry friend

Buyers Remorse: The Problem with Buying Pets Online

It was just another day at RSPCA ACT in February this year, a little ball of white fluff arrived at the Shelter. At just six weeks old, the purebred Japanese Spitz was being surrendered into our care. The reason? After only two days his new owners were in over their heads. He barked too much, he had a skin condition, and what they thought they had ‘ordered’ from the website for about $2000 because of his cute photo wasn’t what they expected. The skin condition was hot spots all over the left side of his body which had turned into ugly scabs. At this age, he should still have been with his

Animal Welfare Changes Passed in ACT Legislative Assembly

RSPCA ACT would like to congratulate the ACT Legislative Assembly for changes made to the Animal Welfare in the ACT. Today political parties put aside their differences and came together to prove that the welfare of animals is of paramount importance in the ACT. A unanimous vote for the Animal Welfare Amendment Act 2016 has passed, with RSPCA ACT amongst the organisations that were approached to provide consultation on the changes. “The amendments will better support our Inspectors as they prosecute cases of neglect as well as implement compliance and other enforcement activities. We see this
