CEO Tammy Ven Dange to Depart RSPCA ACT on 30 June

It is with great respect that RSPCA ACT is announcing the formal resignation of CEO Tammy Ven Dange with her time in the leadership positioning ending 30th June 2018. After four years at the helm, Ms Ven Dange has decided to move on to her next adventure. “I have to say that the last four years have been some of the hardest and most rewarding times that I have had in my career. My passion for the mission and the animals in our care has not diminished in any way, but I feel that it is a good time for both the organisation to seek new leadership and for me to move on to other challenges. I will

UPDATE: Additional CCTV Camera Helps RSPCA ACT Inspectors

Yesterday, RSPCA ACT Inspectors called on the public for information regarding an injured dog that was abandoned in Fyshwick on the morning of Monday 29th January 2018. Additional CCTV footage and witnesses have provided further information on the female Border Collie found in the cubby house. RSPCA ACT Inspectors are still asking for anyone who was in the vicinity of Canberra Outlet Centre in Fyshwick on Iron Knob St, between 12am - 9 am Monday 29th January, to come forward to assist with the investigation. Inspectors have good reason to believe that there may have been witnesses in the area

In 2016, RSPCA ACT Inspectors visited the premises of Mr Hawkes after receiving a complaint regarding the condition of the animals living at the home. RSPCA ACT & Canberra Raiders launch Pet Program

The Canberra Raiders have today launched their official ‘Pet Program’ in partnership with RSPCA ACT. It’s the first time the Raiders have given members and fans the opportunity for their pets to be part of the Raiders family, with the partnership with the RSPCA allowing pets to become Raiders fans. For just $45 you can sign up your pet to be part of the Green Machine family in 2018, with $20 of this amount pledged towards the RSPCA to assist in their protection of welfare of animals. Today at Raiders HQ, Raiders Jack Wighton and Bill Cullen signed up their pets for the program, with Jack’s dog

Breed Specific Legislation Doesn’t Work

Happy Relaxed Pitbull laying on a garden path he has a big pink tongue and a blue grey coat and soft kind eyes
There has been a lot of talk lately about Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) for dogs after a number of horrific attacks locally. The entire community including RSPCA ACT has a desire to see a reduction and prevention in dog attacks from occurring. However, using legislation in this manner has proven to be ineffective in reducing dog attacks. What exactly is BSL? It’s the restriction of specific breeds or cross breeds of dogs regardless of their behaviour. The only form of BSL that the Australian Capital Territory has in place right now is for greyhounds which are required to wear muzzles until

Pet Pool and Beach Safety

Summer is well and truly here and many people are already planning their holidays! If you plan to bring your furry companion along with you there are things you should consider. Here are our top tips to ensure that your holiday is everything to remember – for the right reasons! 1. Pet-Friendly? Make sure wherever you’re going allows animals. Some beaches and campsites that normally allow them may have different rules during the busy holiday period. Give them a phone call and do your research. 2. Make sure your pet can swim: When it comes to dogs, some breeds are instinctively comfortable in

In three cases involving multiple animals seized on five separate occasions, Chantel Carter, a 31 year old Kambah woman, has been convicted and sentenced under the Animal Welfare Act (1992) for failing to provide adequate food, shelter and water, failing to seek veterinary treatment to alleviate pain, as well as neglecting an animal to cause pain. On the 29th April 2015 police attended the defendant’s residence in relation to another matter and noticed dogs in the rear yard that were extremely skinny with their ribs and hip bones visible. Is Your Cat Frisky?

For the second year in a row RSPCA ACT is implementing our ‘Frisky Tom’ campaign. The campaign aims to desex 1,500 cats over a three-year period with the goal of reducing the unwanted cat population in the ACT. Why is this so exciting? RSPCA ACT and participating vet clinics will offer FREE desexing to cat owners who hold a current Centrelink or DVA Gold Card, and live within the ACT or bordering NSW communities including Jerrabomberra, Queanbeyan, Googong and Karabar. Don’t have one of those? No problem! People are still eligible to receive a 20% discount on desexing for their furry friend

A Historical Milestone for Animal Welfare and Greyhounds: ACT Ban Greyhound Racing

It has just been announced that the ACT Government will follow New South Wale’s lead and ban Greyhound Racing in the Territory. All eyes were now on the ACT Government and the future of the industry in the Canberra region. At 4pm they released a statement declaring their intentions of developing processes to end the practice, “There is no future for this industry in the ACT”. The Special Commission of Inquiry into the Greyhound Racing Industry in NSW uncovered damning truths of
