Dog & Puppy Training

*DUE TO CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19), THE FORMAT AND DELIVERY OF OUR GROUP TRAINING CLASSES HAVE BEEN AMENDED TO INCLUDE THE CURRENT SOCIAL DISTANCING REGULATIONS*

RSPCA ACT Dog Training School classes are catered towards dogs and puppies of all different ages and abilities and are limited to eight (8) dogs per class to allow participants to receive more individual attention by our experienced instructors. Our aim is to give your dog the required skills to have a fulfilled, well-adjusted life with their family, using positive reinforcement. Training focuses on manners, impulse control, how to sit, drop, how to walk nicely on lead and how to introduce dogs to each other in a safe manner. This training is also designed to provide you, the dog’s leader, with the skills and confidence to create a relationship with your dog that is based on mutual trust, respect and consistent leadership.

Training courses run for five (5) consecutive weeks and each class has a duration of one (1) hour. Following the submission of an enrolment form, a staff member will contact you to provide additional information regarding your booking. Class dates and times may change subject to the number of bookings.

Courses are $195 and include one (1) pre-recorded online orientation and five (5) shelter-based training classes. Dogs and puppies that have been adopted from RSPCA ACT receive a 10% discount. This course fee also includes a client pack with a clicker training tool, treat pouch and the RSCPA Guide to Dog Behaviour and Training book. Client packs can be collected from the shelter at 12 Kirkpatrick Street, Weston ACT following payment.

Please see our Terms and Conditions here.

On-lead meet and greets will be dependent on the dynamics of the classes and are at the trainer’s discretion. It is critical for all dogs to have a good or neutral experience when learning to interact with each other and for this reason, the instructors will decide if on-lead dog interactions occur.

Orientation and Course Type

All participants are required to view a pre-recorded orientation online prior to the commencement of their course. This orientation is designed to provide education around the fundamentals of dog behaviour and positive reinforcement training. You will have access to the orientation once the course payment has been made. Arrangements can be made for participants who cannot access online content.

We are currently offering two courses, a puppy and a dog course. If you are unsure of which class to choose based on your dog’s abilities, choose ‘please help me select’ on your enrolment form. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we understand that older dogs and puppies may not have been exposed to earlier training opportunities and we can accommodate these situations.

ONLINE CLASSES

In response to Coronavirus (COVID-19) and the social distancing measures in effect, RSPCA ACT has transitioned to live, online puppy and dog training classes via the Zoom Video Communications platform. Our online programs will assist you and your dog to form or continue to build a healthy relationship by providing education around basic obedience, socialisation, behaviour modification and enrichment. During each online session, our trainers will demonstrate skills (with a dog) and provide guidance and feedback to owners using reward based training methods. Time is allocated during each session to ask questions and troubleshoot with the instructor, making it a more personalised experience.

Puppies and dogs are offered a six (6) week course for $195.00 which will include one (1) virtual orientation and five (5) training sessions with a qualified, force-free instructor. Each session will run for approximately 60 minutes.

To participate in these sessions, you will need the following:

  • a video camera, either built in to your device or a separate webcam (most modern computers, smartphones and tablets have this built in)
  • a microphone, either built in to your device or in the webcam (most modern computers, smartphones and tablets have this built in), or a phone
  • a broadband internet connection
  • the Zoom client installed on your device (Zoom has clients for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android). This is a free application. https://www.context.org/help/zoom-quickguide/

We are accepting expressions of interests for online classes. Please submit an online enrolment form. When we have sufficient numbers to commence a class, we will make contact with you via the email address provided on the form.

Please see our Terms and Conditions for Online classes here.

Thank you for your continued support of RSPCA ACT.
