Kids N' Kritters

RSPCA ACT will be running a series of fun, interactive education sessions over the school holidays for youngsters who are interested in learning more about animals. See below for details, class dates and times, and how to book.

All classes (except for Teens n Kritters) are for a 7-13 year age group.

Session times
Monday, Tuesday and Thursday: 9:30am - 3:30pm
Wednesday: 10:30am - 4:30pm

Dog Behaviour
(Maximum of 8 participants)
Cost: $150
Come and visit our dogs! During this session, you will learn how to ‘talk’ to dogs, and understand what they are telling you. You will have a go at recognising the signs of a happy dog, and learn how they might tell you that they want to be left alone! Our shelter dogs are often scared, shy or stressed, so having someone who is able to understand them is a wonderful experience. You may even come home with lots to talk to your own pet about!
Sessions: Monday 7/1/19, Tuesday 15/1/19

Cat Safety
(Maximum of 8 participants)
Cost: $150
Are you a crazy cat person? This session is perfect for you! Participants will visit our cattery, and learn how to make friends with cats in a safe and respectful way. We will look at the ways that cats talk to us without using words, so you will be able to know when they are enjoying being patted, or when they would prefer some alone time! You will also have the opportunity to create enrichment items for the cats, and ask our wonderful staff any questions you may have about our feline friends.
Sessions: Tuesday 8/1/19, Thursday 17/1/19, Tuesday 29/1/19

Caring for Young Animals
(Maximum of 8 participants)
Cost: $150
Puppies, kittens and other young animals are super cute, but need special care. Come and learn about the special types of food, handling and vet care that they need, and help out with some animal care tasks around the shelter. You will learn about how these animal’s bodies and needs change as they grow, and how we can help them. You will also have a chance to visit some young animals!
Sessions: Thursday 10/1/19, Monday 21/1/19, Wednesday 30/1/18

Enrichment for Shelter Animals
(Maximum of 8 participants)
Cost: $150
This is probably our animals’ favourite session! Enrichment is so important for them, as it provides opportunities to use their natural instincts and behaviours, overcome fears and learn to trust humans. It also makes their day a lot more interesting! Participants will learn about the enrichments we use daily here at the shelter, and then create enrichment activities for dogs, cats, birds and rabbits. We will also spend some time socialising our kittens and puppies; this can include patting, playing or talking to the animals.
Sessions: Monday 14/1/19, Thursday 24/1/19, Thursday 24/1/18

Teens and Kritters
(Maximum of 8 participants)
Cost: $150
Are you a teenager who loves animals, but is too young to volunteer at RSPCA? Come and spend the day with us, visiting our animals and learning about the important role of volunteers at our shelter! You will experience the daily tasks involved in the job, including cleaning enclosures, feeding animals and helping them to feel comfortable. Our expert staff will help you to recognise the sometimes subtle ways in which dogs and cats communicate with us, and how we can talk back to them. And, you’ll get to practice some force free dog training methods, partake in some socialisation for puppies and kittens, and help to train our smaller animals, such as roosters!
Sessions: Tuesday 22/1/19

Please note that while we make every attempt to follow planned programs, there may be some days where children are unable to pat or hold animals. This is due to the nature of our shelter; many of our animals are very timid and are not ready to be handled by a group. Decisions around animal interaction are always made with the welfare of the animal as paramount. All sessions may include visits to other animals around the shelter – please let us know if there are any animals that your child is fearful of.

We endeavour to keep as close to our curriculum as possible, however in the event of bad weather or not having animals suitable for the session we will alter the curriculum slightly and/or utilise staff animals. The session will still be interactive and lots of fun!

Location: 12 Kirkpatrick Street, Weston ACT 2611.
