Kids N' Kritters

RSPCA ACT will be running a series of fun, interactive education sessions over the school holidays for youngsters who are interested in learning more about animals. See below for details, class dates and times, and how to book.

All classes (except for Teens n Kritters) are for a 7-13 year age group.

Introduction to Animal Care
(Maximum of 6 participants)
Cost: $150
If you’re new to Kids and Kritters, or have been before but are keen for a taster of our new sessions, Introduction to Animal Care is the class for you. In the session, we will cover general aspects of care for all animals at the shelter, as well as some tips for caring for your own pets. You will also be able to visit some shelter animals, and learn a little about their behaviour! Participation in Introduction to Animal Care will earn you your ‘RSPCA ACT’ card to start your collection.

Cat Behaviour
(Maximum of 6 participants)
Cost: $150
Love cats but find them mysterious? This class will help you to understand the many ways in which cats communicate with us, and each other. We will observe the cat’s body language, and learn some cat friendly ways of introducing yourself. You will learn how we assess cat’s behaviour here at RSPCA ACT, to help them find their perfect family. At the end of the Cat Behaviour class, you will have earned a ‘Cat Whisperer’ card (and probably made a new cat friend or two!).

The 5 Freedoms
(Maximum of 6 participants)
Cost: $150
The 5 Freedoms teach us how to best look after our furry friends. They are used by our vets, Inspectorate, Animal care staff, and are even a part of animal law! In this session, you will learn all about the 5 Freedoms along with some basics of animal body language. You will have the opportunity to work with a variety of animals at the shelter to ensure that they are all enjoying the 5 Freedoms. You will also earn your “5 Freedoms” and “Inspectorate” cards!

Little Critters
(Maximum of 6 participants)
Cost: $150
In Little Critters you will get to visit some our smaller residents - this session may include spending time with rabbits, birds, mice, or even reptiles! We will also have a look at the native wildlife that lives around the shelter, including insects! Participants will learn about these animals through hands on tasks such as observation, preparing food, replacing bedding, and making enrichment activities. At the end of the session, you will have earned your ‘Small Animals’, “Insects” and “Wildlife Spotting” cards!

Teens and Kritters
(Maximum of 6 participants)
Cost: $150
Are you a teenager who loves animals, but is too young to volunteer at RSPCA? Come and spend the day with us, visiting our animals and learning about the important role of volunteers at our shelter! You will experience the daily tasks involved in the job, including cleaning enclosures, feeding animals and helping them to feel comfortable. Our expert staff will help you to recognise the sometimes subtle ways in which dogs and cats communicate with us, and how we can talk back to them. And, you’ll get to practise some force free dog training methods, partake in some socialisation for puppies and kittens, and help to train for our smaller animals, such as roosters!

RSPCA ACT Trading Cards – NEW!
We are excited to announce the launch of our new RSPCA ACT Trading card collection! Each card features a gorgeous RSPCA animal, and shows the new things that you have learned. Cards are only available through our Kids n Kritters program, so get collecting!
Collection folders are also available for $10! These can be purchased when booking any Kids n Kritters session .

Please note that while we make every attempt to follow planned programs, there may be some days where children are unable to pat or hold animals. This is due to the nature of our shelter; many of our animals are very timid and are not ready to be handled by a group. Decisions around animal interaction are always made with the welfare of the animal as paramount. All sessions may include visits to other animals around the shelter – please let us know if there are any animals that your child is fearful of.

Allergy Information: Please note that while we don’t allow children to bring nuts or nut products into a KnK program, RSPCA ACT is not a nut free environment. Our dogs are sometimes given peanut butter as a treat, and this is stored in our kennels. Please advise staff if your child has a nut allergy.

For participants that attend consecutive sessions, please provide a snack or lunch depending on the sessions they are attending.

We endeavour to keep as close to our curriculum as possible, however in the event of bad weather or not having animals suitable for the session we will alter the curriculum slightly and/or utilise staff animals. The session will still be interactive and lots of fun!

Please remember:

  • All participants should bring their own labelled drink bottle
  • All participants must wear appropriate clothing, enclosed footwear, and sunscreen
  • Participants that attend consecutive sessions should bring a snack or lunch (nut and egg free)

Our session educator and volunteers all hold Working with Vulnerable People cards and have met RSPCA requirements to attend Kid’s N' Kritters. For this reason parents are welcome to wait in our waiting area for the duration of the session, however are unable to attend the session with their child. Under special circumstances, you may receive permission to attend, however you are required to hold a WWVP card and pay the participant fee in full.

To makes a booking, please download and complete the form below and email to: pac@rspca-act.org.au
