How many days can you care for an animal at RSPCA ACT?
Did you know it costs an average of $25 a day to care for an animal in care at the Weston Shelter?
At any one time there are approximately 325 animals in care at RSPCA ACT, costing the shelter $8,125 per day and close to $3 million per year just for their basic care.
This is an enormous number and does not include any medical costs.
RSPCA ACT only receives 17% of its budget through government funding leaving the majority of the costs to be funded predominantly by the generosity of the Canberra community.
So how does workplace giving work and how does it help?
Donations made through our workplace giving program come from pre-tax pay. This means that the tax deduction is immediate and can be viewed on your pay slip.
This also means that your donation provides a greater dollar for dollar benefit than if you were to donate any other way. For instance if you earn a salary of $55,000 and you donate $20 a month, RSPCA ACT receives the full amount whereas you incur a tax deductible costs of only $14.91.

Information For Employees
Workplace giving is the simplest way for you to make regular donations that goes directly towards animals in care at RSPCA ACT.
The great thing about workplace giving is that you receive your tax benefit each pay period. The process is simple and does not involve having to set up any direct debits or cheques.
When your employer calculates the amount to be withheld from your salary each pay cycle, the donation amount will be deducted from your gross salary before the deduction of tax.
You do not need to request receipts to substantiate donation deductions arranged through payroll if:
- The total donation amount is included in your payment summary received from your employer; or
- You have a record from your employer outlining the total donation amount for the income year.
In addition all funds given to RSPCA ACT go towards caring for local animals at the Weston shelter.
To get involved all you have to do is:
- Ask your employer to enter into a Workplace Giving Program;
- Nominate RSPCA ACT as your preferred charity; and
Inform your employer that you wish to make regular donations and the amount you wish to donate each pay cycle
Information For Employers
Workplace Giving is a simple way for employees to make donations to their favourite charities and is easy to set up in just a few steps.
Most of the administration is carried out as part of your normal payroll procedures. Each pay cycle your payroll office electronically transfers the donations from any employee to RSPCA ACT in one transaction. You do not need to complete any tax forms and the records you need to keep are straightforward. You will need to keep records such as:
- Forms completed by your employees authorising you to make deductions from their pay
- A record the total deductions made from each employee's pay
- A copy of the remittance you send to RSPCA ACT
Businesses are also able to match employee donations.
This is a great opportunity to demonstrate your business' commitment in support local animals in need of care at RSPCA ACT.
