RSPCA ACT is aiming to clear the shelter this Friday and Saturday (22 and 23 February) with animals being available for adoption at a heavily discounted fee of $29. Last year, every animal which was available for adoption found their forever homes.
‘Clear the Shelter’ is a national RSPCA initiative and shelters in VIC, SA, ACT, NSW and QLD are all participating.
RSPCA ACT CEO Michelle Robertson has high hopes that all the animals available for adoption this weekend will find their forever homes.
“At the RSPCA in the ACT, we currently have 218 animals in our care, of which we expect around 50 will be ready to be adopted.”
“This includes a number of kittens, dogs, cats, rabbits and some birds.”
“Some of our dogs have been with us for a while and are overlooked when potential adopters come in. The Shelter team would be especially delighted if they have the opportunity to be matched with their perfect new family this weekend.”
All animals will be desexed and microchipped, have had their vaccinations, veterinary checks and behavioural procedures.
Ms Robertson pointed out that “our usual screening and adoption procedures will apply to endeavour to match the right animal with the right homes. Please ensure if you are renting you come with permission in writing from your landlord.”
The Weston Shelter has been at capacity since December. This is largely due to a significant increase in animal welfare complaints, seasonal trends and a delayed start to the ‘kitten season’.
RSPCA ACT is encouraging Canberrans who are interested in adding a member to their family to come and adopt during this period”
“Adopting is a great way to give a cat, dog or even a rabbit a second chance by providing a loving forever home. Animals are great companions and make us better people!”
