Valuing your 'friendchips' with your furry friend on International Microchip Day

RSPCA ACT is reminding Canberra pet owners who value their friend-chips with their furry friends, to get them chipped and if they are already chipped, to check that all details are up to date. CEO Michelle Robertson explains that “regardless that microchipping is mandatory in the ACT, we still see too many animals that either come in without a microchip, or with details being outdated. “If your pet goes missing, a microchip will help to quickly identify your pet and have them reunited with you as soon as possible. And this is one of our goals, to reunite people with their pets as fast as

It's time to give Bullies a break

RSPCA wants 'bullies' to stop being judged on their appearance. While no one likes a bully, the RSPCA’s across Australia say it’s time to give the canine version a second chance. This financial year alone RSPCA ACT has seen 621 dogs and puppies come into the care of our Weston Shelter, with 231 of these dogs belonging to the ‘bully’ breeds. The unfortunate reality for these loveabull pups is that they are often the ones who wait the longest at our Shelter for a new home. Just like Angel and Sassy, who have each been patiently waiting at our Shelter for over 300 days. RSPCA ACT CEO Michelle

Clear the Shelter: 93% of the ACT Shelter cleared!

RSPCA ACT’s ‘Clear the Shelter’ saw 108 animals adopted during the national $29 adoption drive which took place over the weekend. By closing time on Saturday, 93% of adoptable animals at RSPCA ACT found their forever homes. Of all the animals ready for adoption, only 9 animals were not adopted. One of the dogs who did not find her forever home, is Mitsy, who has been in our care for over 200 days. Mitsy is desperately looking for her perfect family and needs someone with plenty of backyard space and 6ft Colourbond fencing. Mitsy loves to play with tennis balls, and despite her size is quite

RSPCA ACT seeing reports of pets in hot cars and heat stress

Temperatures are at a high and RSPCA ACT has seen a number of animals needing urgent medical attention due to heatstroke and being left in hot cars. It is ESSENTIAL to take the necessary care and precautions to avoid heat stress for your animals during summer RSPCA ACT CEO Michelle Robertson expressed her concerns regarding a rising number of heat-related incidents, “Our pets can’t always adequately cool themselves during such intense heat. It’s up to us as responsible pet owners to do everything we can to protect them.” “We want to caution the community to avoid heartbreak by potentially

Why Chocolate & Your Dog Don't Mix

It's Easter and time to talk about chocolate and your pets. While chocolate is delightfully delicious and we wish we could share the experience with our beloved pet; it’s important to remember that chocolate can be poisonous and even life-threatening to animals. While some people may argue that they’ve given chocolate to their pet with no adverse effects; it’s vital to note that like any food or medicine, the reaction to the toxin is dependent upon the dosage and size of the animal. Chocolate contains the compound Theobromine that can affect the central nervous system. For their health and

Home for the Holidays: $99 for any adult dog or cat!

RSPCA ACT is currently bursting at the seams with cats and dogs desperately seeking a happy and loving home for the holidays and beyond. To help them find their Christmas miracle, our Weston Shelter is reducing the adoption fee from tomorrow for ALL ADULT cats and dogs to $99 until Christmas Eve. RSPCA ACT CEO Tammy Ven Dange shared her Christmas wish, “We have a number of animals that have been waiting at the Shelter for more than two hundred days. All I want for Christmas this year is to ensure that these pets can share this holiday season with their new families. Come on Canberra! Bring

Buyers Remorse: The Problem with Buying Pets Online

Haloumi
It was just another day at RSPCA ACT in February this year, a little ball of white fluff arrived at the Shelter. At just six weeks old, the purebred Japanese Spitz was being surrendered into our care. The reason? After only two days his new owners were in over their heads. He barked too much, he had a skin condition, and what they thought they had ‘ordered’ from the website for about $2000 because of his cute photo wasn’t what they expected. The skin condition was hot spots all over the left side of his body which had turned into ugly scabs. At this age, he should still have been with his
